About Us

History:  The Porterville Historical Museum opened in 1965 as a direct result of the interest spurred by Porterville's centennial.  Through the diligent efforts of residents, Southern Pacific Railroad gave the city permission to operate a museum on the site of its passenger station, which was built in 1913.

Governing Board/Staff:  The Museum Board of Directors consists of 15 individuals who are dedicated to preserving the history of the region.  The staff includes a curator and volunteers, who handle exhibits, finances, cleaning, research, cataloging, maintenance and anything else that needs to be done.

Funding:   Public support is what makes it possible for the museum to continue to preserve Porterville's rich history.  The museum is supported  by donations from individuals, local businesses and fund raisers.

What the museum means to Board Members.
A visit to the Porterville Museum is a glimpse into our local past.
-Doris Hosfeldt
I enjoy being a director of our museum because of two things.  One, it is my way of paying back to previous people that have made the museum what it is today.  And secondly, to be able to hold items of history with my own hands is a very satisfying thing to be able to do.
